Smart Synergies Make Better Energy: Hanwha Total Petrochemicals

TotalEnergies has joined forces with Korean companies from 2003 to create what is now the Hanwha Total Petrochemical joint venture, one of the most successful business partnerships in Korea. Together, the partners operate an innovative petrochemical complex in Daesan, in South Chungcheong Province. This smart collaboration provides us with a strong strategic base in Asia and is a flagship example of our dedication to making energy better.

Inspired and Innovative

For over a decade, innovation has inspired Hanwha Total Petrochemical to create chemicals such as polypropylene and polyethylene (made from monomers produced via steam cracking), styrene and paraxylene, as well as petroleum products that include jet fuel, gasoline and diesel.  Produced at the Daesan complex, the chemicals are supplied to the electronics, IT and automotive industries and are key ingredients in consumer products.

A recent capital investment of $1.8 billion has seen the Daesan refining and petrochemical complex further expand its activities by doubling its production capacity. A new condensate splitter, aromatics unit and EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) polymer unit were added. EVA is used in ethylene and vinyl acetate copolymers, which are in turn used to manufacture foam for the footwear industry, packaging films and films to protect solar panels.

A Green Approach

The Daesan complex is committed to an environmentally responsible approach. As part of this, Hanwha Total Petrochemicals has introduced harmony into the workplace and its surrounding environment by creating a green space for employees to enjoy. The onsite eco-park injects nature into the industrial complex, for an eco-friendly environment that inspires the workforce to innovate.
